The 5th edition of the SBI Life National Amateur (Below ELO 2300) Chess Championship got off to a rousing start here at Thakur College of Science & Commerce, Thakur Village, Kandivali (East), Mumbai.
This event which has attracted a total of of 254 players across 16 states of India and it is being conducted by Indian Chess School under the aegis of All India Chess Federation, Maharashtra Chess Association and Mumbai Suburban District Chess Association.
Earlier, the event was inaugurated by Shri Pradeep Kumar, Regional Sales Manager of SBI Life by lighting the tradtional lamp and playing a game agains the joint State Amatuer Champion, Ridit Nimdia.
A total of 11 rounds would be played to decide the National Amateur Chess Champion 2016 of India (Men & Women) who will go on to represent India in the World Amateur Chess Championship, which is scheduled at Italy in April 2017, The players would also be vying for the prize pool of Rs. One Lakh.
The 1st which concluded today witnessed the seeded players sailing through to round 2 by defeating the lower rated players. The top seeded player for this event is Ameya 55Audi (ELO 2089) from Goa while V S Raahul (ELO 2062 - Tamil Nadu) and Y Chakravarthy (ELO 2055) from Andhra Pradesh are seeded 2nd 3rd respectively.
For the host state, Candidate Master Aditya Mittal (ELO 2040) is seeded 4th and will pose a strong challenge for the title.
