It was cheers for host Maharashtra as 10-year old, Candidate Master Raahil Mullick created the biggest upset by defeating 2nd seeded V S Raahul of Tamil Nadu in round 2 of SBI Life 5th National Amateur Chess Championship in progress here at Thakur College of Science & Commerce.
In a scintillating display of attacking chess, Raahil sacrificed two pawns in the opening to initiate an attack on Raahul's King and culminated it with a beautiful Rook sacrifice on move 25 to catch the King in mating net. The youngsters in this round continued to hold sway as 13-year old Rohnit Amin from Maharashtra defeated 8th seeded Rupesh Ranjan of Bihar in 70 moves from a closed Sicilian opening.
Meanwhile, the top-seeded Ameya Audi of Goa was in his elements today as he defeated Vishal Gaikwad of Maharashtra quickly in just moves from white side of Pirc opening.
The culmination of round 2 witnessed a big group of 58 players sailing into round three with as many points. A total of 11 rounds are scheduled in this event in the remaining 6-days to decide the National Amateur Chess Champion of India.
